About Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, on Croatia's southern Adriatic coast, was for centuries the independent Republic of Ragusa, a wealthy maritime city-state. Its Old Town, enclosed by massive stone walls above the sea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-known sights on the Mediterranean.
Walking the City Walls, about 2 km around the Old Town, gives the classic views over terracotta roofs and the sea. The Stradun, the main marble-paved street, leads past the Rector's Palace, churches and monasteries, while the cable car up Mount Srđ, Fort Lovrijenac and a boat trip to Lokrum Island are popular additions. Parts of the TV series Game of Thrones were filmed here.
Two to three nights allows time for the city and a day trip. Kotor in Montenegro, Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Elaphiti Islands and the town of Cavtat are common excursions, and Split is around three to four hours away by road.
Cruise ships bring large crowds at midday in peak season, so early morning or late afternoon visits to the Old Town are more comfortable for groups.

Dubrovnik has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters.
- Spring (March–May): Mild to warm, with highs from around 15°C to 23°C.
- Summer (June–August): Hot and sunny, with highs around 28–30°C and warm sea water.
- Autumn (September–November): Warm in September and October, becoming wetter in November.
- Winter (December–February): Mild, with highs around 12–14°C, though rain and wind are common.
May, June and September offer warm weather with fewer crowds than July and August. Pack sun protection, a hat and water for walking the walls, plus comfortable shoes for the polished stone streets and steps.
- Arriving: Dubrovnik Airport at Čilipi is about 20 km south-east of the city; the airport bus or a taxi takes around 30–40 minutes.
- Getting around: The Old Town is car-free and has many steps. City buses link the Old Town's Pile Gate with the hotel areas of Lapad and Babin Kuk and the ferry port at Gruž.
- By sea and road: Ferries and catamarans connect Dubrovnik with nearby islands. There is no railway, so onward travel is by road or sea.
- Groups: Coaches cannot enter the Old Town and stopping near its gates is restricted, so drop-off points and timings should be planned in advance with the local operator.
Mobile data: For Indian travellers, an eSIM or European data plan bought before travel usually costs much less than Indian international roaming packs. Local prepaid SIMs are sold at the airport, kiosks and phone shops; a passport is needed at purchase. A Croatian or other EU SIM or eSIM works across other EU/EEA countries, but Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina are not in the EU, so check coverage before day trips there.
Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafés.
Power: 230 V with Type C/F sockets. Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so a universal adapter is needed.
Indian food is limited in Dubrovnik, with only a few options, and Indian groceries are hard to find, so bringing some packed snacks from home can help. Most restaurants offer vegetarian pasta, risotto, pizza and salads, while Jain meals should be requested well in advance through the DMC or the restaurant. Halal options are scarce.
Local foods that suit vegetarians include blitva (Swiss chard and potatoes with olive oil and garlic), grilled seasonal vegetables and cheese burek. Note that black risotto is made with cuttlefish ink. Konzum, Studenac and Tommy supermarkets are good for snacks, fruit, milk and bread.
