Austria
Austria: Imperial grandeur meets Alpine calm.
About Austria
Austria pairs the grandeur of Habsburg-era Vienna with the quiet drama of the Alps. Baroque palaces, opera houses, and coffee-house culture sit a short train ride from glacier villages and alpine lakes, making it one of the easiest countries in Europe to combine culture with scenery on a single itinerary. Salzburg's old town, Innsbruck's mountain backdrop, and Vienna's imperial core give travelers a strong sense of history without ever feeling like a single-city trip.

Austria has a temperate continental climate: warm summers (June to August) suit sightseeing and lake travel, while winters (December to February) bring reliable snow to the Alps, ideal for ski itineraries. Spring and autumn are mild with fewer crowds. Best time to visit: May to September for cities and lakes, or December to March for Alpine skiing.
Austria's rail network (OBB) is fast, punctual, and connects every major city and many alpine towns directly. Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck all have efficient trams and metro systems for getting around once you arrive.
4G/5G mobile coverage is strong nationwide, including most alpine regions. Free Wi-Fi is standard in hotels, cafes, and city centers.
Austria uses the Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities, though smaller alpine guesthouses and markets may prefer cash.
Austria is known for fine porcelain, Swarovski crystal, traditional loden wool clothing, and Viennese pastries and chocolates. Most shops close on Sundays and public holidays.
Austria applies a standard VAT rate of 20% on most goods. Non-EU visitors can claim a refund on purchases over 75.01 EUR from a single store, processed at the airport on departure.

Visa Requirements for Austria
For Indian passport holders. Confirm the current rules with the consulate before applying.
Visa Requirement
As a Schengen Area member, Austria is covered by the same Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa used across all member states. Citizens of the EU, EEA, and visa-exempt countries such as the US, UK, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days.
However, Indian passport holders must apply for a Schengen Visa before travelling. If Austria is the main destination or first point of entry on a multi-country trip, the application should be submitted through Austria's consulate or an authorised visa centre.
