Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

location_on Reykjavik, Iceland schedule 4 hours

Overview

Soak in the milky-blue geothermal seawater of the Blue Lagoon, set in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-west Iceland. The water stays at around 37–39 °C, so you can bathe outdoors even when the air is cold.

Highlights

  • Warm water outdoors: Wade out between dark lava rocks, whatever the weather.
  • Silica mud mask: Your silica mud mask is included – pick it up at the Mask Bar.
  • In-water bar: One drink of your choice is included, served without leaving the lagoon.
  • Easy logistics: A towel is provided, and the return coach from Reykjavik is included.

Good to know

  • Time on site: Allow about 4 hours; the return transfer from Reykjavik is included.
  • Activity level: Easy. Gentle wading and soaking; in cold weather the short walk from the changing rooms to the water is chilly.
  • Best for: Groups wanting a relaxed half day and first-time visitors to Iceland.

Facts

History

  • The lagoon began as runoff pools beside the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, which opened in 1976.
  • In 1981 a psoriasis patient bathed here and reported relief; bathing facilities followed in 1987.

Did you know?

  • The water is a by-product of the power plant, drawn from deep underground at about 240 °C.
  • The lagoon renews itself roughly every two days, and silica gives it the milky blue colour.

Tour manager tips

  • Everyone must shower without a swimsuit before entering; free conditioner is provided – leave it in, as silica stiffens hair.
  • Remove jewellery and contact lenses first, and drink plenty of water while bathing.
