Eiffel Tower

location_on Paris, France schedule 2 hours

Overview

Ride up the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel's wrought-iron landmark built for the 1889 World's Fair, and watch Paris open out beneath you from the second floor. Then carry on by lift to the top platform at 276 metres for the full panorama.

Highlights

  • Second-floor views: The Seine, Trocadéro, Montmartre and the Arc de Triomphe laid out like a map.
  • The summit: A 360-degree view over the whole city from the top.
  • Glass floor: Step out over the drop on the first floor on the way down.
  • Two ways up: Lifts all the way, or the stairs to the second floor and the lift beyond.

Good to know

  • Time on site: Allow about 2 hours, including security and lift queues.
  • Activity level: Easy by lift; the stairs option means several hundred steps.
  • Pairs well with: A Seine River Cruise from the piers at the foot of the tower.

Facts

History

  • Construction began on 28 January 1887 and the tower was completed on 31 March 1889 for that year’s Exposition Universelle.
  • The design is credited to engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, with decorative arches added by architect Stephen Sauvestre.

Did you know?

  • It was the world’s tallest man-made structure for 41 years, until New York’s Chrysler Building in 1930.
  • Around 60 tonnes of paint are applied roughly every seven years to protect its 18,038 iron pieces from rust.

Tour manager tips

  • Travel light and keep bags in front in the crowds below the tower.
  • There are over 600 steps to the second floor – comfortable shoes for anyone climbing.
  • Agree a regroup point at the foot of the tower before going up, and watch bags in the crowds.
