Leaning Tower of Pisa Climb

location_on Pisa, Italy schedule 1 hours

Overview

Climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa and feel the tilt underfoot as the spiral staircase winds up inside its walls to the bells at the top. From there you look down on the Piazza dei Miracoli and out across Pisa and the Arno valley.

Highlights

  • Feel the lean: The tilt is obvious as you climb and shifts as you go round.
  • The top: The bells and a view over the square, the Cathedral and Baptistery and the city.
  • Cathedral: Step inside the Duomo next to the tower, included with your ticket.
  • Timed slot: Entry is at a set time, with numbers limited on each climb.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 1 hour, including the climb and the Cathedral.
  • Activity level: Strenuous for some: steep, narrow, worn spiral steps and no lift, and the lean can feel unsettling.
  • Best for: Travellers who are steady on stairs and want the view from the top as well as the photo from below.

Facts

History

  • The foundations were laid on 9 August 1173; the tower began to sink once the second floor was reached in 1178.
  • Work then halted for most of a century, and the bell chamber was finally added in 1372.
  • Closed in 1990, the tower was stabilised between 1993 and 2001, cutting the tilt from 5.5 to 3.97 degrees.

Did you know?

  • There are seven bells, one for each note of the major scale.
  • Galileo is said to have dropped two cannonballs from the top, though the main account was only published in 1717.

Tour manager tips

  • Children under 8 may not climb, and under-18s must be with an adult.
  • Bags go in the cloakroom beside the ticket office, and slots are strict – be on time.
  • The spiral steps and the lean can feel disorienting – go steadily.
