Vasa Museum Entry

location_on Stockholm, Sweden schedule 1.5 hours

Overview

Come face to face with a 17th-century warship, standing whole in the Vasa Museum’s dim, purpose-built hall. Roughly 98 percent of what you see is original, and the Vasa is the only preserved ship of her age anywhere in the world.

Highlights

  • The ship itself: Circle the hull on six levels, from the waterline up to the high stern.
  • Carved decoration: Hundreds of sculptures, with painted models showing her original colours.
  • Life on board: Sea chests, coins, shoes and tools from the wreck.
  • The film: A short film on the Vasa’s story, shown in several languages.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 1.5 hours to see the ship and the main exhibitions.
  • Activity level: Easy walking with stairs between the viewing levels; the hall is cool and the lighting low.
  • Best for: Families, school groups and anyone curious about ships or Swedish history.

Facts

History

  • Built for King Gustav II Adolf, Vasa sank on her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 after sailing just 1,300 metres.
  • Anders Franzén traced the wreck in 1956, and she was raised on 24 April 1961.
  • The purpose-built Vasa Museum opened on 15 June 1990.

Did you know?

  • Divers recovered almost all her cannons in 1663–1665, some 35 years after the sinking.
  • About 700 carved and painted sculptures were meant to frighten enemies and inspire the crew; the masts on the roof show her original 52-metre height.

Tour manager tips

  • The ship hall is kept at about 18°C, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
  • Lighting is low to protect the wood: watch your step and keep together.
  • Wheeled cases and large luggage are not allowed and there are no lockers.
