Viking Ship Museum
Overview
See the Oseberg and Gokstad ships, two of the best-preserved Viking ships ever found, along with the objects buried with them. Both served as graves for high-status people, so the ships come with carved furniture, vehicles and everyday goods from the Viking Age.
Highlights
- The Oseberg ship: Bow and stern covered in intricate carving in the ‘gripping beast’ style.
- The Gokstad ship: A ship of almost 24 metres, with holes for 32 oars.
- The Tune ship: The fragmentary remains of a third ship, built around 900.
- Grave goods: A richly carved wooden cart – the only complete Viking Age cart found – plus sledges and beds.
Good to know
- Time on site: About 1.5 hours.
- Activity level: Easy indoor walking and standing around the ships.
- Best for: History lovers, families and anyone curious about the Vikings beyond the myths.
