St. Moritz

About St. Moritz

St. Moritz is a high Alpine resort in the Engadin valley of Graubünden, in south-eastern Switzerland, set beside a lake at around 1,800 metres. It developed as a spa and then as one of the birthplaces of winter tourism, and it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948.

In winter, the Corviglia ski area, the frozen Lake St. Moritz, which hosts events such as horse racing on the ice, and the historic bobsleigh run attract visitors. In summer, the Engadin lakes, hiking trails and mountain railways such as the Muottas Muragl funicular and the cable cars at Diavolezza offer wide views of glaciers and peaks.

Two to three nights allows time for the village, a mountain excursion and a scenic rail journey. St. Moritz is a terminus of the Glacier Express to Zermatt, a journey of about eight hours, and lies on the route of the Bernina Express over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy. Both routes use the Rhaetian Railway lines, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For Indian groups, a ride on the Bernina or Glacier Express is often a highlight of a Swiss itinerary.
