Gstaad
About Gstaad
Gstaad is an upmarket Alpine resort in the Saanenland, in the far west of the Bernese Oberland close to the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Its chalet-style village, mountain pastures and quiet elegance have drawn international visitors for generations, both for winter sports and for summer walking.
The heart of the village is the car-free Promenade, lined with wooden chalets and boutiques. From the surrounding valleys, cable cars climb to viewpoints and hiking areas, and a short drive away at Col du Pillon, Glacier 3000 offers year-round snow and the Peak Walk suspension bridge linking two summits. Nearby villages such as Saanen, Lauenen and Château-d'Oex make pleasant excursions.
Two to three nights allow time for Glacier 3000 and a scenic train journey. The GoldenPass line connects Gstaad with Montreux on Lake Geneva and, via Zweisimmen, with Interlaken, so it fits naturally on a route between the Lake Geneva region and the Bernese Oberland.
In summer, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival brings classical concerts to the area, and the gentle valley walks suit families and senior travellers.

At around 1,000 metres, Gstaad has a mountain climate with fresh summers and snowy winters; temperatures on the glaciers are much colder.
- Spring (March–May): Snow lingers at higher levels; valley highs rise from around 7°C to 15°C.
- Summer (June–August): Pleasant, with highs around 20–23°C, cool nights and afternoon showers.
- Autumn (September–November): Clear, crisp days in September and October, turning cold later.
- Winter (December–February): Cold and snowy, with highs around 0–3°C and frost at night.
June to September suits sightseeing and walks; December to March is ski season. Pack warm layers, a rain jacket, sunglasses and good shoes, plus thermals for winter and Glacier 3000.
- Arriving: The usual gateway is Geneva Airport, about three hours away by train with a change at Montreux, or a little over two hours by road. Zurich Airport is further, with train connections via Bern and Zweisimmen.
- Scenic rail: The GoldenPass line runs through Gstaad between Montreux and Zweisimmen, with connections on to Interlaken. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on this route.
- Getting around: The village centre is small and walkable, and local buses link Gstaad with Saanen, Lauenen and the valley lift stations.
- Groups: The Promenade is car-free, so coaches set down nearby; Glacier 3000 at Col du Pillon is usually reached by coach or local bus.
An eSIM or a European data plan bought before travel usually costs much less than Indian international roaming packs. Switzerland is not in the EU, so an EU plan may not cover it; check that your eSIM includes Switzerland. Prepaid SIMs are easier to buy in larger towns or at the airport; a passport is needed at purchase.
Hotels generally offer free Wi-Fi, and mobile coverage in the valley is good. Switzerland uses 230 V with Type C/J plugs; Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so a universal adapter is needed.
Gstaad has little or no dedicated Indian food, so groups usually arrange Indian meals through the DMC, or plan them in larger towns such as Bern, Montreux or Lausanne. Packed snacks from home are useful. Vegetarian options are available in most restaurants, and Jain meals must be requested well in advance through the DMC. Halal food is very limited.
Vegetarian-friendly Swiss dishes include cheese fondue, raclette with potatoes and pickles, and Rösti, crisp grated potato (ask for it without bacon). The Saanenland is also known for its mountain cheeses. Swiss supermarket chains such as Coop and Migros are useful for fruit, milk, bread and snacks; it is worth stocking up before arriving.
