Overview

Go behind the scenes at Lord’s in St John’s Wood, the Home of Cricket. You walk through the Victorian Pavilion, look out over the famous sloping outfield and see the urn at the heart of every Ashes series.

Highlights

  • The Long Room: The members’ room in the Pavilion, looking out on to the field.
  • Players’ Dressing Rooms: Sit where Test teams prepare on match days.
  • Media Centre: Where the press covers the game, when open to tours.
  • MCC Museum: Memorabilia from centuries of cricket, with the Ashes urn.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 1.5 hours.
  • Activity level: Moderate: walking, standing and some stairs.
  • Pairs well with: The Oval Cricket Ground for a cricket day, or Madame Tussauds.

Facts

History

  • Thomas Lord opened his first ground in 1787 on what is now Dorset Square; the present St John's Wood site was first used in 1814.
  • The Pavilion, designed by Thomas Verity, opened in 1890 and is Grade II* listed.
  • India won the 1983 World Cup final here, beating West Indies by 43 runs under Kapil Dev.

Did you know?

  • The field slopes: the north-west side is 8 feet 2 inches higher than the south-east side.
  • The honours boards list Test centuries and five-wicket hauls at Lord's – yet Sachin Tendulkar never made it on to them.
