London
Stonehenge
Overview
Walk around the great stone circle of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, one of Europe’s best-known prehistoric monuments. At the visitor centre you can see objects left by the people who lived in this landscape.
Highlights
- The stone circle: A walk around the monument on a path that brings you close to the stones.
- The exhibition: Over 250 objects found nearby, including jewellery, pottery and tools.
- Neolithic houses: Reconstructed homes showing how people lived 4,500 years ago.
- 360-degree view: An audio-visual display that places you inside the circle through the seasons.
Good to know
- Time on site: About 1 hour on site – tight for both stones and exhibition; the drive from London is on top.
- Activity level: Easy – level walking on an exposed site; shuttle buses link the visitor centre and stones.
- Pairs well with: A River Thames Cruise or the London Eye back in London.
Facts
History
- Building began around 3100 BC, and the great sarsen circle was raised between 2600 and 2400 BC.
- Most sarsens came from West Woods, about 16 miles north; the bluestones were brought from the Preseli Hills in Wales.
- UNESCO inscribed Stonehenge, with Avebury, as a World Heritage Site in 1986.
Did you know?
- A 2024 study traced the Altar Stone to north-east Scotland, some 430 miles away.
- The stones are aligned on the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset.
Tour manager tips
- Shuttles link the visitor centre, 1.5 miles from the stones, with the monument.
