Barcelona
Park Güell Entry
Overview
Walk through the Monumental Zone of Gaudí’s hillside park, where mosaic-roofed pavilions, a dragon stairway and a hall of columns lead up to a wide terrace looking over Barcelona. Entry is by timed slot, which keeps numbers manageable in this part of the park.
Highlights
- Dragon Stairway: Mosaic-covered steps with the tiled dragon, or salamander, at their centre.
- Hypostyle Room: 86 columns holding up a ceiling of small domes decorated with tile-shard mosaics.
- Nature Square: The open terrace above, edged by a long, undulating tiled bench.
- Entrance pavilions: Two gatehouses with trencadís roofs beside the main gate on Carrer d’Olot.
Good to know
- Time on site: About 1½ hours in the Monumental Zone.
- Activity level: Moderate: outdoor slopes, uphill paths and steps, often in full sun.
- Pairs well with: The Sagrada Familia Entrance Ticket, for more of Gaudí the same day.
Facts
History
- Eusebi Güell asked Gaudí to plan an estate for well-off families on his land, and work began in October 1900.
- With too few buyers it was abandoned in 1914 – only two of the 60 planned houses were built.
- The City Council bought it, and it opened as a municipal park in 1926.
Did you know?
- Güell gave the park an English name because he wanted to recreate British residential parks.
- Gaudí himself moved onto the estate in 1906, living there with his father and niece.
Tour manager tips
- The park is on a hillside with uphill paths – comfortable shoes, water and sun protection.
- Entry to the Monumental Zone is by timed slot, so keep the group together at the gate.
- Agree a regroup point before the group spreads out across the terraces.
