About Florence
Florence (Firenze), the capital of Tuscany, is the city where the Renaissance flourished under the patronage of the Medici family. Its compact historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the River Arno, is filled with masterpieces of art and architecture.
Highlights include the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with Brunelleschi's dome, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery, the Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo's David at the Accademia Gallery, Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, and the Ponte Vecchio lined with jewellers' shops. Piazzale Michelangelo offers a classic panoramic view over the city, and the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens lie across the river.
Two to three nights suits most itineraries. Pisa is about an hour away by train, Bologna under 40 minutes by high-speed train, and Siena, San Gimignano and the Chianti hills make rewarding day trips by coach. Rome is about one and a half hours away and Venice a little over two hours.
The area around San Lorenzo and the central market is well known for leather goods, a favourite with shoppers in Indian groups.

Florence lies in a river valley surrounded by hills, so summers are hot and winters cool.
- Spring (March–May): pleasant, highs from around 15°C to 24°C.
- Summer (June–August): hot, highs around 31–33°C, and sometimes higher.
- Autumn (September–November): warm early, cooling from around 27°C to 14°C, with more rain.
- Winter (December–February): cool, highs around 10–12°C, with cold nights.
April to June and September to October are the best times to visit. In summer carry water and sun protection; bring comfortable shoes for stone streets in every season.
- Arriving: Florence Airport (Peretola) is about 5 km from the centre and linked by tram to the main station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, in about 20 minutes. Pisa International Airport is about an hour away by train.
- Getting around: the historic centre is compact and best explored on foot. Buses and trams serve outlying areas.
- Tickets: buy tickets before boarding and validate them on board. Major museums such as the Uffizi and Accademia use timed entry, so pre-booking is strongly advised.
- Groups: the centre is a restricted-traffic zone (ZTL), so coaches need permits and use designated drop-off points and parking outside the historic core.
Mobile data: for Indian travellers, an eSIM or a European data plan bought before departure usually costs much less than Indian international roaming packs. Local prepaid SIM cards are sold at the airport and in phone shops; a passport is needed at purchase. A SIM or eSIM from any EU/EEA country works in Italy under EU roaming rules.
Wi-Fi: free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and many public places.
Power: 230 V with Type C/F/L sockets. Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so bring a universal adapter.
Florence has a fair choice of Indian restaurants and a few South Asian grocery shops, mostly near the centre and the main station. Vegetarian food is easy to find, halal options are available at some Middle Eastern eateries, and Jain meals should be requested in advance through the DMC or the restaurant.
Tuscan dishes that suit vegetarians include ribollita (a thick bread and vegetable soup), pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup) and schiacciata (Tuscan flatbread); check that soups are made without meat stock. Coop, Conad, Carrefour and Esselunga supermarkets are convenient for snacks, fruit and milk.
