About Cologne
Cologne (Köln) is one of Germany's oldest cities, founded by the Romans on the west bank of the Rhine. It is a lively, informal university and media city, known for its carnival, its local Kölsch culture and the great Gothic cathedral that dominates the skyline.
First-time visitors usually start at Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose twin spires rise right beside the main railway station. From there it is a short walk to the Old Town (Altstadt) and the Rhine promenade, the Hohenzollern Bridge with its thousands of love locks, the Chocolate Museum on the riverbank, and the Museum Ludwig for modern art.
One or two nights is enough for the city itself. Bonn and Düsseldorf are each about 20–30 minutes away by train, Aachen about an hour, and the Rhine Valley with its castles and vineyards can be reached via Koblenz in about an hour. Cologne also combines easily with Frankfurt, about an hour away by high-speed train.
Families often add a day at Phantasialand, a large theme park in nearby Brühl. Groups visiting in late November and December will find some of Germany's best-known Christmas markets around the cathedral and the Old Town.

Cologne has a mild, temperate climate with rain spread through the year.
- Spring (March–May): gradually warming, highs from around 10°C to 19°C.
- Summer (June–August): pleasant, with highs around 23–25°C and occasional hot spells.
- Autumn (September–November): cooling from around 20°C to 9°C, with more rain.
- Winter (December–February): grey and damp, highs around 4–7°C, snow is infrequent.
May to September is the most comfortable time to visit, and December is popular for the Christmas markets. Pack layers, a rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
- Arriving: Cologne Bonn Airport is linked to Köln Hauptbahnhof (main station) by S-Bahn and regional trains in about 15 minutes. Düsseldorf Airport is another option, about 45–60 minutes away by train or road.
- By rail: Köln Hauptbahnhof sits directly beside the cathedral and has fast connections to Frankfurt, Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin.
- Getting around: the centre is compact and walkable. Trams and buses run by KVB cover the wider city. Buy tickets before boarding and validate paper tickets where a stamping machine is provided; day tickets are good value for several trips.
- Groups: the Old Town around the cathedral is largely pedestrianised, so coaches drop passengers at the edge and the group continues on foot.
Mobile data: for Indian travellers, an eSIM or a European data plan bought before departure usually costs much less than Indian international roaming packs. Local prepaid SIM cards are sold at the airport and in phone shops; a passport is needed at purchase. A SIM or eSIM from any EU/EEA country works in Germany under EU roaming rules.
Wi-Fi: free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and many public places.
Power: 230 V with Type C/F sockets. Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so bring a universal adapter.
Cologne has a good choice of Indian and Pakistani restaurants spread across the city, and halal food is easy to find at the many Turkish and Middle Eastern eateries. Vegetarian options are widely available. Jain meals are best arranged in advance through the DMC or the restaurant.
Local dishes that suit vegetarians include Reibekuchen (crisp potato pancakes, often served with apple sauce) and Halver Hahn, which despite its name is a rye roll with Gouda cheese, mustard and onions. Ask how fried items are cooked if this matters. REWE, Edeka, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets are widespread for fruit, milk, bread and snacks.
