About Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main is Germany's leading financial centre and home to the European Central Bank. Its modern skyline rises beside a carefully rebuilt historic core, and the city is the birthplace of the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Its airport is one of Europe's busiest and a major gateway for flights from India.
Highlights include the Römerberg square with the Römer city hall, the reconstructed lanes of the new old town, the Cathedral, Goethe House, the Museum Embankment along the River Main, the views from the Main Tower and the Zeil shopping street. Across the river, Sachsenhausen is known for its traditional apple-wine taverns.
One to two nights is typical, often at the start or end of a tour. Heidelberg is about an hour away by road or train, the Rhine Valley around Rüdesheim about an hour by road, and Cologne about an hour by high-speed train.
Frankfurt makes a convenient arrival point for groups from India, with a short transfer from the airport and an easy first day of sightseeing before continuing along the Rhine or south to Bavaria.

Frankfurt has a mild temperate climate, among the warmer in Germany.
- Spring (March–May): mild, with highs rising to around 19–20°C by May.
- Summer (June–August): warm, with highs around 24–26°C and occasional hot spells.
- Autumn (September–November): pleasant early on, then cool and damp.
- Winter (December–February): cool to cold, with highs around 3–5°C and occasional frost.
May to September suits sightseeing and Rhine cruises, and December brings the Christmas market. Pack layers, a rain jacket and comfortable shoes, and a warm coat in winter.
- Arriving: Frankfurt Airport is linked to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn in about 15 minutes, and a long-distance station at the airport has direct high-speed trains to many German cities.
- Getting around: the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses cover the city, and the centre is compact enough to walk between the Römerberg, the river and the Zeil.
- Tickets: tickets are sold at machines and through the RMV app; day tickets are convenient for sightseeing.
- Groups: coaches can drop groups near the Römerberg and the riverbank, while the old town lanes themselves are pedestrian.
Mobile data: for Indian travellers, an eSIM or a European data plan bought before travel usually costs much less than Indian international roaming packs. Local prepaid SIMs are sold at the airport and in phone shops (passport needed for registration). Germany is in the EU, so an EU SIM or eSIM also works across other EU/EEA countries under EU roaming rules.
Wi-Fi: free Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafés, at the airport and on many trains.
Power: 230 V with Type C/F sockets. Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so a universal adapter is needed.
Frankfurt has a good choice of Indian and Pakistani restaurants, with several in the area around the Hauptbahnhof. Halal food is widely available at Turkish and Middle Eastern places. Jain meals should be requested in advance through the DMC or restaurant.
Local dishes that suit vegetarians include Grüne Soße (a cold herb sauce served with potatoes and boiled eggs), Handkäs mit Musik (a tangy cheese with onions) and Frankfurter Kranz cake. Supermarkets such as REWE, Edeka, Lidl and Aldi are useful for snacks, fruit, milk and bread; most close on Sundays, but shops at the Hauptbahnhof and airport stay open.
