Gstaad
GoldenPass Panoramic Train Experience
Overview
Take a GoldenPass panoramic train from Gstaad and watch the Swiss countryside slide past large panoramic windows: chalet villages, alpine pasture and forested valleys. The line links Montreux on Lake Geneva with the Bernese Oberland, crossing the Pays-d'Enhaut on the way.
Highlights
- Panoramic windows: Large windows that make the landscape part of the ride.
- Pays-d'Enhaut: Wooden chalets, meadows and forest between Gstaad and the Lake Geneva side.
- Lake Geneva end: Towards Montreux the line drops past vineyards to the lake.
- Reserved seating: Seat reservations are included where required.
Good to know
- Time on site: About 2 hours on board.
- Activity level: Seated throughout; the only effort is boarding and leaving the train with your bags.
- Pairs well with: Glacier 3000, high above the nearby Col du Pillon.
Facts
History
- The Montreux Oberland Bernois line opened in stages from 1901, reaching Gstaad in December 1904 and Zweisimmen in July 1905.
- In 1931 the railway ran the Golden Mountain Pullman Express, the forerunner of today's panoramic trains.
- Since December 2022 the GoldenPass Express runs from Montreux to Interlaken without a change of train.
Did you know?
- At Zweisimmen a ramp adjusts the coaches' wheels from metre gauge to standard gauge.
- The line loops around Gstaad because a direct climb to the Saanenmöser Pass, its highest point, would have needed rack equipment.
Tour manager tips
- Keep bags on the racks and valuables with you.
- For window photos, switch off the flash to avoid glare on the glass.
- Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry a layer.
