About Krakow

Kraków was the royal capital of Poland for centuries and remains its cultural heart. Spared the destruction suffered by Warsaw in the Second World War, its historic centre was among the first places inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in 1978.

The Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe, is framed by the Renaissance Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica, from whose tower a trumpet call sounds every hour. A short walk leads to Wawel Hill with its Royal Castle and Cathedral above the Vistula, and to Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter. A green ring of parkland, the Planty, encircles the Old Town.

Two to three nights allow time for the main day trips: the Wieliczka Salt Mine, about 30 minutes away, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, about an hour and a half by road. The mountain resort of Zakopane is around two hours away, and Warsaw about two and a half hours by fast train.

The underground chapels and carved salt halls of Wieliczka appeal to all ages, making it a popular choice for family and student groups.
