Mt Titlis

location_on Lucerne, Switzerland schedule 2 hours

Overview

From Engelberg you ride the gondola past Trübsee, then the Rotair, the revolving cable car up to the snow and ice of Titlis at over 3,000 metres. At the top you walk inside a glacier and out onto a high suspension bridge.

Highlights

  • Rotair ride: The cabin turns a full circle, so everyone gets the view.
  • Glacier Cave: A 150-metre walkway inside the glacier.
  • Cliff Walk: Europe’s highest suspension bridge.
  • Ice Flyer: An optional chairlift over glacier crevasses.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 2 hours at the top; travel from Lucerne and the ride up are extra.
  • Activity level: Easy walking on snow and icy paths at altitude; take it slowly, wrap up, and skip the Cliff Walk if heights unsettle you.
  • Pairs well with: An Excursion to Mt Pilatus on another day.

Facts

History

  • Titlis was probably first climbed in 1739 by Ignaz Hess, J. E. Waser and two other men from Engelberg.
  • Engelberg grew around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120.
  • The cable car to Klein Titlis opened in 1967; the Rotair followed in 1992 as the world's first revolving aerial cableway.

Did you know?

  • The Cliff Walk, opened in December 2012, is about 100 m long and 1 m wide over a 500 m drop, and is believed to be Europe's highest suspension bridge.
  • The summit itself reaches 3,238 m.

Tour manager tips

  • Bring warm layers, gloves and sunglasses – it is cold and bright up there all year.
  • The Rotair turns a full circle on the way up, so any spot gives the view.
  • Wear shoes with grip for snow and icy paths.
