Keukenhof Gardens

location_on Amsterdam, The Netherlands schedule 2 hours

Overview

Walk among millions of spring bulbs at Keukenhof in Lisse, the Netherlands’ best-known flower garden and an easy outing from Amsterdam. It opens in spring only, when more than 800 varieties are on show along lakes, lawns and winding paths.

Highlights

  • Themed gardens: Historical gardens with early tulip varieties, plus a quieter natural garden.
  • The windmill: A 19th-century pumping mill brought from Groningen and rebuilt in the park.
  • Bulb fields by boat: Optional electric-boat trips, booked in advance, leave from near the windmill.
  • Photo stops: Mass plantings of colour around every corner, ideal for group pictures.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 2 hours in the gardens, not counting the journey from Amsterdam.
  • Activity level: Easy but plenty of walking outdoors on level paths – the park has around 15 km of them.
  • Pairs well with: The Traditional Cheese & Clog Factory.

Facts

History

  • The estate was once the 15th-century hunting ground of Teylingen Castle; its name means kitchen garden.
  • In 1857 Jan David Zocher and his son, designers of Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, relandscaped it in the English style.
  • Bulb growers founded the show garden in 1949 and it opened to the public in 1950.

Did you know?

  • Around 40 gardeners plant roughly 7 million bulbs each year, donated by more than 100 growers.
  • The park covers about 32 hectares but is open for only around eight weeks each spring.

Tour manager tips

  • Keukenhof is in Lisse, outside Amsterdam – agree the coach meeting point and time before the group spreads out.
  • Paths are long and spring weather changes quickly, so comfortable shoes and a light rain layer help.
