Volendam Fishing Village Walk

location_on Volendam, The Netherlands schedule 1.5 hours

Overview

Walk through Volendam with an English-speaking guide, from the busy harbour front to the quiet lanes of wooden houses behind it. This fishing village on the Markermeer, north-east of Amsterdam, still revolves around its harbour.

Highlights

  • De Dijk: The waterfront street of fish stalls, cafés and shops.
  • The Doolhof: The old quarter of narrow lanes, wooden houses and small bridges.
  • Fishing heritage: How the village made its living from the water.
  • Local fish: Smoked eel, herring and kibbeling to try, at your own cost.

Good to know

  • Time on site: About 1.5 hours.
  • Activity level: Easy, mostly level walking; the lanes are narrow and the waterfront gets crowded.
  • Best for: First-time visitors to the Netherlands and families; costume portraits are available from local studios at your own cost.

Facts

History

  • Volendam grew from Edam’s old harbour: in 1357 Edam dug a new canal to the Zuiderzee, and farmers and fishermen settled here.
  • The Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuiderzee in 1932, turning it into the freshwater IJsselmeer and shifting the catch from herring towards eel.

Did you know?

  • Hotel Spaander was a base for painters in the late 1800s and early 1900s and still holds over 1,300 works made in Volendam.
  • The local pop style is called Palingsound – literally ‘eel sound’.

Tour manager tips

  • The dyke is breezy, so bring a light windproof layer.
  • Agree a regroup point on the harbour front and keep together in the crowds.
