Facts
History
- Gouda cheese is named after the town of Gouda, where farmers brought their cheeses to the market square to be sold.
- Dutch clogs, or klompen, are carved from willow or poplar, then dried for several weeks so the wood does not crack.
Did you know?
- All-wooden clogs are certified safety shoes – in an accident the wood splits rather than dents, so the clog comes off easily.
- Around three million pairs are still made each year.
Tour manager tips
- Gouda is graded by age, from young (about four weeks) to very old (up to 21 months).
- Gather the group in a semicircle so everyone sees the clog-carving demonstration.
- Fix a regroup time and place before the group heads into the shop.
