About Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and home to Europe's largest seaport. Much of its centre was destroyed by bombing in May 1940, and the city was rebuilt with a bold, forward-looking approach that has made it the country's showcase for modern architecture.
First-time visitors should see the Erasmus Bridge over the Nieuwe Maas, the tilted Cube Houses and the arched Markthal food hall near Blaak, and the views from the Euromast tower. A harbour boat tour shows the scale of the port, while the old harbour of Delfshaven, where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1620, preserves an older Dutch character.
One or two nights suit most itineraries, or Rotterdam can be a day trip from Amsterdam, about 40 minutes away by direct train. Delft is about 15 minutes away by train and The Hague about 25 minutes, and the UNESCO-listed windmills of Kinderdijk are a short drive or waterbus ride away. The city also lies on the main rail line to Antwerp and Brussels.
For families, Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp) is a long-established favourite, and the Markthal is an easy stop for groups with free time to browse food stalls.

Rotterdam has a mild, changeable maritime climate, with rain spread through the year and frequent wind.
- Spring (March–May): highs rising from about 10°C to 18°C, with bright spells and showers.
- Summer (June–August): highs around 21–23°C, occasionally warmer, with long evenings.
- Autumn (September–November): highs falling from about 19°C to 10°C, wetter and windier.
- Winter (December–February): highs around 6–7°C, grey days and occasional frost.
May to September is the most comfortable time to visit. Pack layers, a light rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
- Arriving: Most international travellers fly into Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which has direct trains to Rotterdam Centraal taking about 25–30 minutes. Rotterdam The Hague Airport, on the city's northern edge, handles mainly European flights and is about 20 minutes from the centre by bus or taxi.
- Getting around: The RET network of metro, trams and buses covers the city well, and water taxis cross the river.
- Tickets: Pay with a contactless bank card or an OV-chipkaart, tapping in and out on every journey; day tickets are also available.
- Groups: The main sights are more spread out than in Amsterdam, so a coach transfer or a combined walk-and-metro plan works well for groups.
Indian travellers usually save money with an eSIM or European data plan bought before travel, rather than an Indian international roaming pack. Local prepaid SIM cards are sold at the airport and in phone shops; a passport is needed at purchase. An EU SIM or eSIM also works across other EU/EEA countries under EU roaming rules.
Free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafés and on many trains. The Netherlands uses 230 V with Type C/F sockets; Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so bring a universal adapter.
Rotterdam has a good range of Indian and Pakistani restaurants, and its large Surinamese community, many of Indian (Hindustani) descent, means Surinamese roti with potato, vegetables and curry is easy to find. Vegetarian options are plentiful, and Jain meals can be arranged on request in advance through the DMC. Halal food is widely available at the city's many Turkish and Moroccan eateries.
Easy local vegetarian choices include Dutch pancakes (pannenkoeken), poffertjes, vegetarian stamppot (mashed potato with vegetables) and Dutch cheeses; pancakes contain egg. The Markthal has many food stalls under one roof. Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Lidl supermarkets are convenient for fruit, milk, bread and snacks.
